Months of planning, weeks of preparation, and hectic days putting it all together lead to a first class run at the Huntington Reservoir. Hours before the first rays of sun stream through leafless trees and glisten off the snow and ice, the tents are alive with activity. Veteran organizers check lists, arrange runner packets, add fuel to heaters and generators and always find time for a smile and cheerful answer.
Meanwhile, runners from across North America arrive. Old friends with hundreds or thousands of miles together chat about races of old and events to come. New runners and fun runners are welcomed warmly and stand side by side with the seasoned long distance elite.
In the main tent coffee, juice, and an assortment of carbohydrates give runners a jump start on the trek ahead. Wonderful soups are cooking - an extra reward for later. Prizes awaiting the swift sit silently on tables catching the eyes of passersby.
All the volunteers who make this run possible scramble into place. They will stand for hours in sub-freezing temperatures to take care of runners, record numbers at check points and give directions or advice when asked.
This is the Huntington Huff!
